We're under construction...

If you've been to Santa Mònica in the last few weeks, you may have seen that we're under construction again! This time the air conditioning system is being redone. But we're not closed! You can come and read quietly in the Balda space, where you'll find a selection of books from comics to essays, and sit down for a while on the poufs, it's like being at home. If you come, take the opportunity to vote in the Participation space, and take the opportunity to take a look at the results of the last few weeks and see which answers have received the most votes.

You can still stay for the sessions in the Bar Lounge  (Tuesdays of video, Wednesdays of sound and body, Thursdays of voice and word), you can find the programme on the website or on our Instagram. In addition, at the entrance you can find a small retrospective of the graphic posters from the exhibitions of recent years at Santa Mònica.

 

At the office we are working very hard to continue with all the programming and especially to prepare the next exhibition: CITISSIMUM ALTISSIMUM FORTISSIMUM, curated by cabosanroque and Enric Puig Punyet.

Report: Distensiu Mòniques #3

Wednesday February 5

We started the day with a yoga session led by Carla. We stretch, we breathe, we connect, we caress: check-in from the body. Then we do a round of animality: each one must make an animal noise, the scene is quite funny and, when we finish, we are more relaxed, with awake bodies and shared laughter still resonating in the air.

We continue with a "Cometes" session, a proposal from the Editing guild: Each guild has printed quotes that have to do with their current research and they are read and pasted in a constellation. This process extends, branches out and generates synergies and synaesthesia around common concerns, weaving connections that enrich the collective dialogue. We talk about spaces, internet, networks, technology, relationships, guilds, architecture, violence, power, bread, digestion, rituals and materiality, among others.

After this exchange of ideas, it is time to eat, and then a moment of pause in which they take the opportunity to watch a video. Some let themselves fall to the placeholders to take a short nap, while others leaf through the Fiu's new books. The day concludes with the sharing of the anonymity mailbox and the workshop of moniketes, cute puppets, in charge of Violeta.

 

Thursday, February 6

We start the day with a time of body connection guided by Tat: we stretch, breathe and listen to each other to arrive present. Then, Laura and Vero lead the reading group. The voices alternate in a reading aloud that invites both attentive listening and shared reflection.

We also talk about the video watched the previous day and the questions and doubts it raised: about how to enter and be in an art center, about what it means to be public, about subjectivation, citizen participation and agency. The Mòniques reflect on what it means to be Mòniques and how they are at the center.

With our bodies more awake and our ideas in motion, we close the day with the inertia of the shared still present.

The Santa Mònica Warehouse

Step into one of the least visible yet most essential spaces of the Santa Mònica: its warehouse. A place filled with hidden stories behind every object, where all the materials needed for exhibitions and the center’s operations are stored and organized.

It is a transit space, where elements constantly come and go, adapting to the changing needs of the exhibitions and projects hosted at Santa Mònica. From repurposed wooden structures to furniture from previous installations, boxes filled with exhibition memories, cables, spotlights, stands, tools, and all kinds of essential items for setting up and dismantling each show.

The warehouse not only reflects the center’s dynamic activity but also highlights the importance of reuse and sustainability in the world of art and culture. Many of the stored materials are reused in new exhibitions, promoting sustainability.

Fictionalizing the Night with the Mòniques 

Yesterday, the Mòniques bid farewell to the year with a unique party: "Fictionalizing the Night: Dynamics Towards Intimacy," an activity curated by the Guild of Spaces. 

Although the clock struck noon, the first-floor wing felt like midnight, with an enveloping darkness softened by warmth and, of course, music. It was an atmosphere that invited leisure, fun, and pleasure. 

One of the improvised premises was reading while dancing, as at the entrance of the party, there was a small yet fascinating collection of texts related to the body and leisure.

New participation space in the hall!

We have recently launched the participatory space in the hall that we mentioned a few weeks ago.

The Domestic Data Streamers device works as follows: Each week a question is printed, obtained from the mailbox or posed by Santa Mònica or resident artists/collectives, and two possible answers are proposed. At the end of the week a vote count is made and the percentage of each answer is extracted.

Each week a record of the question and the answers is added, and the one with the least votes is shredded (although it is still legible). In this way a visual record is generated on the wall of the space, which will be completed after sixty weeks.

Meanwhile, the mailbox is always available to deposit questions and answers, which we collect and record daily. Come and vote and leave your question!

Cooking tamales with the Mòniques

It's Wednesday, and the Mòniques have gathered in the Impulsem kitchen for a cooking workshop for a mourning ritual. The guide of this experience is the artist, choreographer and cook. Susana Isunza Vizuet, who places us in the context of pre-Columbian Mexican tradition. After some body dynamics around the kitchen table, we are ready to begin.

Susana explains that corn is nixtamalised to make it assimilable by the human body, a traditional process that is carried out with quicklime. She also talks about the ‘memory of the mouth’, a concept that reminds us that this absolutely sensory cavity holds deep memories that connect us to our origins. It takes us back to the first moments of life, when we drink our mother's milk, and makes us reflect on how we often forget to eat calmly and savour what we eat. In modern life, vital processes such as eating and digestion have been relegated to the background.

This time, we prepare two types of tamales: one with chicken and the other with mushrooms. The procedure is as follows: on a banana leaf we spread some ground nixtamalised corn dough to which we have added other ingredients such as tequixquitl, lard or tomatillo skin infusion; on top, a layer of creamy beans, then a little mole and, finally, the chicken or mushrooms. The leaves are carefully folded and everything is steamed. Once cooked, the banana leaves are removed, and the tamales are ready to eat.

This activity has been curated by the gastronomic guild within the framework of their research. Specifically, the workshop is part of the line of thought ‘A dietetics of the spirit’ with which they investigate the ritual processes that accompany the act of eating.

A green centre

On October 21, World Energy Saving Day is celebrated, which aims to raise awareness among the population, as well as administrations, companies and workers, about the importance of reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency to in order to preserve the planet's natural resources.

In Santa Mònica, we obtained the Environmental Quality Guarantee Badge (DGQA) in the category of visual arts spaces and cultural centers, awarded by the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda.

Previously, a technical advisory task was commissioned to assess compliance with the basic criteria that marks the badge in the different areas: energy savings and efficiency; water saving; waste management; purchases; mobility; spaces; environmental ratings; noises and vibrations; and environmental information and education.

The technical advice consisted of a detailed analysis of the criteria to be applied in each category of the DGQA; visits to the equipment to learn about its current state; documentation analysis; proposals for improvement for the fulfillment of the criteria and finally the preparation of the report and the necessary documentation for the processing of the DGQA.

The flora of Santa Mònica

At Santa Mònica, we have a small botanical collection that decorates and brings life to the spaces. In the offices and throughout the center, you can find a series of plants that have been selected for their ability to adapt to indoor environments, such as monstera deliciosa, pothos, or dracaena. 

And for fungi lovers, bonus images of some mushrooms that have settled on a plant in the Sala Bar...

Abans del Vendaval: The production process

On October 2nd we will inaugurate a new exhibition "after the Windstorm" and we will bring you some vestiges of the production. The exhibition has been curated by Montserrat Moliner, Tere Badia and Irati Irulegi, and will feature the collectives Agitació Diska, DU-DA, LAC Laboratori d’Art Comunitari (Sant Boi), Sindillar / Sindihogar, SiteSize, TiritiTrans Tran Trans and La creatura.

These are the furniture plans for each group, which they designed together with the Exhibitions team during the production process of the exhibition.

Goodbye Mòniques 2023-2024! 

Today took place the last official meeting of the Mòniques 2023-2024 with a "Prototype Market", where each guild exhibited the prototypes developed throughout their research. The Publishing Guild has edited a compilation of quotes from the various guilds to be able to group them into a booklet-fanzine, we leave you a taste below. We take this opportunity to say goodbye to this edition of Moniques and wish everyone a good summer and good luck in the future!

Behind the scenes: Building "Time Machines"

Since the The other side exhibition was dismantled, starting on June 2 and until the very day of the inauguration of "Time Machines", last Thursday, June 27, the artist Toni Hervàs has been working tirelessly on the creation of his sculptures, and the assembly and distribution of the other artists' pieces, which make up a chromatic maremagnum of intensities and longings. The creation of his sculptures was carried out in the same space where they are now, and from the Santa Mònica we have had the pleasure of witnessing this unique process.

Chronicle: Curatorial session at the CTE Amposta

The first exhibition that will take place in 2025, curated by the artistic duo Cabo San Roque (Laia Torrents and Roger Aixut) together with Enric Puig Punyet, aims to investigate and question the world of high-performance sports. On June 11 and 12, we held a collective meeting in Amposta to share the curatorial and creative processes and take the opportunity to get closer to the world of high-performance sports from the bowels of the Centre de Tecnificació Esportiva de les Terres de l’Ebre.

Below follows a chronicle of the session:

 

Tuesday, June 11, 2024

We arrive at the CTE Amposta around 11am. We leave the bags in the rooms and we are given a brief tour of the center's spaces. Next we go to the library, where a suitably large table is waiting where we sit in a circle. Time for introductions: who are you and what do you expect from this meeting? Some have known each other before, but this is the first time that the entire group is in a space to meet with the purpose of collectively building the exhibition.

After eating we return to the living room and while the rest arrive, we browse through books from the library. The round of sharing intentions begins: each person comments on what lines and concepts they are interested in investigating, from what sensitivity and interests they approach the topic, and even some first configurations of the pieces they want to exhibit.

Each one speaks from their own sensitivity, the approaches are very diverse and have to do with the discipline of each artist, the medium they want to use and the subject they want to deal with.

 The rest of the day includes a call with the center's psychologist, a visit to the Nautical Rowing Club and finally we visit the fencing room, where a group of young people train methodically and rigorously. Throughout the day we talk to athletes and coaches, we question them about their disciplines, their routines, their careers, etc. to try to understand what it means and what it takes to be a high-performance athlete.

 Wednesday, June 12, 2024

The second day begins at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast and at 9 a.m. we meet again in the library. We continue with the session.

Before leaving, we pass by the athletics track where we speak with a young athlete specialized in javelin throwing. Again, we question him with general questions about his routine and more specific questions about his discipline. This concludes our stay at the CTE Amposta. We finish the meeting with some exquisite rice dishes before parting ways. It has been, without a doubt, a profitable session.

Donem la benvinguda a les Mòniques, el grup d'artistes residents 2023/24 

 

Relatoria poètica d'Alejandro Santaflorentina.

Sala d’actes del Santa Mònica. Una vintena de cadires en cercle. A cada cadira hi ha una caixa sorpresa, però tothom sap que conté una tassa. Li diuen a la Marta “vull el té promès” i ella queda confosa. Havia entès “Vull el teu promès”. Les tasses s’omplen de té i cafè. De moment, sense intercanvi de parelles. Els cossos es van reunint a l’espai. Les camises i les bosses es pengen de les cadires. Les mans i les galtes es toquen i es reconeixen.

Els cossos seuen a les cadires. Tot comença amb una frase: “Avui és el dia que esdeveniu Mòniques”.

(...)

De cop, se sent una veu que parla. Què passaria si això fos un scape room del qual no pots sortir fins desfer els models preexistents que tens al cap? La veu desitja que els processos que comencen vagin teixint un vestit de plaer per caminar amb ell. Però quan la veu calla, es segueix parlant del glossari com si no hagués passat res. És curiós, perquè es parlava de reacció i no ha reaccionat ningú.

S’obre la caixa per a l’anonimat i es llegeixen els missatges. Tres persones s’apropen per intentar desxifrar un dels missatges, que costa de llegir. “Te ayudo? Lo he escrito yo”. Shhhh. Se suposa que ha de ser anònim. Però quan acaba la lectura dels missatges algú diu “No en falta una?” La meitat dels anònims ja tenen nom i ara es proposa també posar nom a la promoció de mòniques, com a l’escola. Es tracta de no ser les Mòniques del 2023-24 i poder ser els cargols.

Tot es mou. Els cossos i els objectes es desplacen d’un lloc a un altre. L’espai es profana i es reinventa. L’esmorzar de càtering es baixa del pis de dalt i es col·loca sobre una prestatgeria. Les boques engoleixen els croissants i els cubells de brossa engoleixen els objectes que ningú reclama.

L’Enric diu que això dels post-its és per fer-ho fàcil, no perquè sigui una dinàmica de post-its. Vale? Això és important. “Cuántas podemos poner?” li pregunten. “Solo era una, pero veo que nadie me está haciendo caso”.

Cau un post-it a terra i cau també el tema de si fer encàrrecs a altres gremis. S’aclareix que la federació de competències té a veure amb el que es vol fer, no amb el que se sap fer. Potser hauria d’anar acompanyada d’una federació d’incompetències. “No penso fer una pàgina web”.

Utopia Rambles – Realitat Utòpica d'un collage espectral

Escàner de la realitat interpretat per cossos utòpics

Les Rambles es constitueixen d'una part exterior, el seu aspecte, i d'una interior, tot allò que succeeix de manera oculta, com pot ser l'activitat mercantil tant material com humana. Aquesta part externa és captada no sols per milions de cambres a mans de turistes, sinó també per càmeres de seguretat o, fins i tot, per l'ull d'un mateix que es converteix en la visió, o visions, d'un espectacle assumit per un fluid humà que transita per un espai que no tolera cap estranyesa, cap alteritat, cap negativitat i al mateix temps està plena de tot això.

Prenent el caràcter espectral que tenen els cossos i els espais de i en les Rambles, la idea d'aquest procés és captar-los i traslladar-los al Santa Mónica, alhora que el centre ocupa les Rambles. Llavors, com captar aquests espectres? Proposo escanejar diferents persones / espais / situacions / esdeveniments a través d'una aplicació mòbil Polycam. Alguna cosa que qualsevol té al seu abast. Aquesta aplicació escaneja qualsevol superfície estàtica i, després, les imatges es poden traslladar a altres llocs amb realitat augmentada AR o poden constituir un codi obert que es va nodrint en el temps.

Proposo un projecte de recerca i experimentació artística comunitària sobre la utopia Rambles, entenent la seva creació constructiva com un exercici formal sobre els espais i les persones. Una utopia dels cossos, fins i tot dels cossos inerts. I així vaig creant un document experimental en realitat virtual on es recorren espais pertanyents a tot l'entorn Rambles, conjugant a més diferents situacions que interactuen amb diferents elements per crear una nova experiència virtual.

Utopia Rambles – Croquis del projecte Cub-topia presentat per a l'espai expositiu

És un projecte que neix de l'abstracció màxima d'un objecte de 3 dimensions que representi a cadascun dels 44 artistes d'Utopia Rambles.

Es pren de referència un píxel, un mòdul prefabricat d'acer amb una base de fusta de 50x50cm pensat per a un fàcil assemblatge i transport, amb característiques mutables que es condicionen segons l'espai ho requereixi.

Es tria el cub com a mòdul principal, aquest mòdul multiplicat per 44 dóna cabuda al lliure acoblament i fàcil muntatge amb els seus mòduls veïns per formar un paisatge continu d'usos infinits.

Utopia Rambles  – Artistes I (Marla Jacarilla, Iris Verge, Montse Amat, Rafael Frazão i Ortésia Cabrera)

Utopia Rambles agrupa més de 40 artistes per imaginar i actuar en temps real sobre l'Àmbit Rambles. "D’alguna manera s’està convertint això en una mena d’espai, no només de creació artística, sinó també d’experimentació metodològica”.

Utopia Rambles  – Acta del grup de programació I

Arribem.

Ens mirem.

Ens mantenim en peus com si asseure'ns en la taula ens obligués a ser més seriosos.

Parlem, parlem, parlem...

I les cames es dirigeixen a la taula com si sabessin que la serietat és el que se'ns demana.

Parlem, parlem, parlem...

Propostes inconcluses, buits varis, inquietuds i gàrgares: Què fem aquí? Per a què servim? Qui som?

Les velles preguntes sense resposta.

Algú, enfadat per la tasca organitzativa que ens aclapara, exclama:

—Som funcionaris! Vull crear!

—Cal organitzar-se! —diu un altre.

—Cal concretar! —respon aquell.

—Creem el dispositiu que ens permeti fer art! —diu un animal racional que passava per allà.

Parlem, parlem, parlem...

I de sobte una veu que s'havia perdut en el silenci:

—Hauríem de fer un calendari... Mira... veieu? Això per exemple... això que van escriure aquells... podríem posar...

És clar! Un calendari! Ens van cridar a la programació Com no se'ns havia acudit?

—I una fitxa! Fem una fitxa! Un paper on els altres ordenin els seus anhels...

Deixem de parlar per dir coses.

I riem, I fem una mostra del que ha de ser la nostra fitxa (Ai... la nostra fitxa, quina gran revelació...) per mostrar-la als altres.

I de sobte ens sembla que la burocràcia és un art i ens encanten els arxius, els tampons, els maniguets, les finestretes i les hores del desdejuni.

I decidim que repartirem les fitxes perquè els nostres companys les emplenin amb les coses que tenen per dir i fer, les coses que encara no han dit o fet, fins i tot les que només som capaços d'imaginar.

—I seran de colors segons sigui l'acció!

—Sí! —diem tots—. De colors!

Perquè de sobte ens sembla que les nostres estimades fitxes constituiran un meravellós arxiu soviètic que una vegada exposat cremarem amb molt d'orgull.

I de sobte pensem en el vi i la cervesa i en Dionís. I ens animem a emplenar la nostra estimada primera fitxa per iniciar el calendari.

—Fem una ocupació d'aquest espai un cap de setmana per conèixer-nos i assaborir-nos! Posa-ho en la fitxa!

Algú contesta:

—Una ocupació? Si tenimos permís!

—Cert! Anomenem-li campaments!

—Què més dóna el nom —diu un altre—, només són paraules!

I així ens donen les dues. I ens diem alegres que aconseguim fer una fitxa. I ja gairebé ens anàvem i va dir algú:

—I les actes seran poesies!

Utopia Rambles  – Presentació. Curadores (Itziar González Virós, Elena Blesa Cábez i Enric Puig Punyet)

Avui presentem Utopia Rambles (01.02–21.05.2023)! Aquesta iniciativa posa el focus en el procés de creació d’imaginaris col·lectius i exposa de forma detallada la metodologia d’aquest procés d’acció col·lectiva, com una caixa d’eines de codi obert. Apostem per l’experimentació real, no simulada, per part d’un cos col·lectiu format expressament per al projecte, un cos, que, per tant, encara s’està explorant i coneixent a si mateix. Per això, no podem dir amb exactitud, a l’inici del procés, com serà l’exposició que en resultarà d’aquí dos mesos.

Aliens, colonialisme i gotelé. Sobre això i molt més trobaràs a la nova exposició del Santa Mònica, La tradició que ens travessa. I així et podràs desfogar llançant figuretes de porcellana a una diana, sentir-te com un personatge d’un saló burgés i canviar la seva disposició o descobrir que darrera d’una escenografia reinventada del Liceu s’amaguen unes membranes zombis.

Aquesta setmana al Santa Mònica Per Dins et volem convidar a que no vinguis a veure’ns. Sí, ho has llegit bé: no vinguis perquè trobaràs Santa Mònica tancat fins al 26 de desembre, per coherència amb els objectius de reduir la despesa energètica del centre al 50%, d’acord amb la peça 2016/17 de Joana Moll.

Ja són molts els estudiants que canvien la rutina de les aules i els exàmens per l’experimentació amb el joc de llums de Tabula Rasa i l’ocasió de convertir-se en veïns de la Penélope a Desnonissea. Des de escoles com Arts Bellera dedicades a l’aprenentatge de les arts visuals i escèniques a grups universitaris com la classe d’Antropologia de l’Art de la UB. Tot un alumnat de diverses edats i llocs de Catalunya que ha passat a formar part de les obres d’Exposar, no exposar-se, exposar-se, no exposar.

Els alumnes han viscut visites úniques pel centre que els han permès conèixer de primera mà la complexitat dels processos de creació de les obres artístiques i a més com aquests projectes es relacionen entre si i cobren vida a través de la participació del públic. No faltaven els somriures i crits plens d’emoció al llançament de Desnonissea, ni les mirades curioses sobre Janus, Itinerari Virtual, Agraïments o Obrir una porta al costat de la Rambla en la que pengi una soga amb campana. Així mateix, i com a part de tota una generació cada cop més conscienciada amb la problemàtica del canvi climàtic, l’alumnat ha compartit la seva reflexió sobre 16/2017 i les mesures que el Santa Mònica està adoptant per reduir la seva despesa energètica.

Els artistes de l’àmbit de circulació i cossos fan una proposta de conversa distesa amb artistes en un entorn performatiu, similar a una perruqueria.

A la primera sessió Azahara Cerezo, artista resident de l’àmbit de creació i programació digital, conversa amb l’artista Antoni Abad.

A la segona sessió l’artista convidat és el col·lectiu Conxita Cyborg.

La sala d’actes del Santa Mònica es converteix així en una perruqueria per compartir la visió sobre l’art i l’actualitat en un clima quotidià, on qui es talla els cabells té molt a explicar, el perruquer molt a preguntar i el públic que espera para l'orella i fins i tot té alguna cosa a dir.

L’art i la creació contemporànies troben al Santa Mònica el seu lloc idoni per mostrar-se i exhibir-se. A l’exposició Exposar · No exposar-se · Exposar-se · No exposar, les obres de Roc Parés, Jordi Guillumet, Mònica Roselló, Roger Bernat, Joana Moll, Mariona Moncunill i Mario Santamaría apunten cap al present i el futur, i en principi poca cosa tenen a veure, formalment al menys, amb l’art clàssic. Però va haver un moment en què el que ara diem “clàssic” va ser contemporani: les escultures de Policlet d’Argos, Calímac d’Atenes o els artistes de l’escola de Pèrgam, van ser trencadores al segle V a.C.i al període hel·lenístic. El temps les ha atorgat l’etiqueta de “clàssiques”, com potser, qui sap, també ho farà amb els artistes actuals.

La peça Desnonissea de Roger Bernat, nom amb ecos de l’Odissea d’Homer (una altra obra no ja clàssica, sinó atemporal), s’ha vestit i decorat amb l’Afrodita de la poma, el Diadumen, el Màrsias escorxat... Per alguna raó serà.

La setmana passada vam celebrar la Semana Grande al Santa Mònica! Unes jornades de tres dies de treball i activitats en les que artistes del nou cicle, residents i equip de producció del centre vam posar en comú els seus projectes i metodologies de treball. Una romeria per la Rambla, dinàmiques de treball creatiu, qüestionament del procés artístic... són alguns dels ingredients que conformen la recepta del nou projecte que tenim entre mans.

El debat i comunicació que ha fluït en el grup ha permès establir unes bases i relat comú que ha posat en marxa el desenvolupament intern de cada artista amb la seva obra. Durant els pròxims dies us informarem de com evoluciona aquesta primera fase de creació.

Aquests dies estem coneixent els i les artistes que participaran al proper cicle del centre que es podrà veure a partir del pròxim gener. Hem organitzat 3 jornades de treball, convivència i intercanvi d'experiències. La semana grande, així és com li hem dit, posarà en contacte els i les artistes residents amb els qui acaben d'arribar per crear un nou espai de pensament, creació i marc de treball. S'han organitzat un seguit d'activitats, performances, i fins i tot una romeria. Us mantindrem informats.
