Espai Kapwa
Workshop on revitalization of pre-colonial Philippine baybayin calligraphy. Before the Spanish colonisation and the imposition of the Latin script, the peoples of the islands had their own abugida, or syllabary alphabet, system. This system was connected to the environment: the sounds, the sea, the waves and the shells. The revitalisation of our calligraphy is one of the forms of resistance to colonialism and imperialism that the Filipinx diaspora have been using for the last decade. We will explain its history and current practice and will experiment with different methods to materialise this writing.
Led by Espai Kapwa (Marlon B. Quintero and Gemma Ferreón)
Espai Kapwa
Espai Kapwa is a project of research, action and dissemination of pre-colonial Filipin values, promoted by Marlon B. Quintero and Gemma Ferreón. With the concept kapwa as a transversal element, we intend to promote critical reflection around history and hegemonic colonial narratives about our bodies, psychologies and territories. We work with the objective of facilitating the collective articulation of artists, researchers and other politically aligned organisations of the Filipinx diaspora, both locally and internationally.
