We are Mòniques, we are R.A.M.!

Roc Domingo, Anita García and Martí de la Malla, the Mòniques Education Guild, 2024-25.

We embrace the metaphor of the porous onion to understand our multilayered situation in the context of Santa Mònica.

Since September we have been working on the intersections between art and education. Specifically, we are investigating how contemporary artistic practices can propitiate, trigger or encourage diverse didactic methodologies in educational contexts.

We have three lines of work open, all of them crossed by a key concept: MEMORY:

  1. FUTURE TEACHERS: We are developing a residency project at the UB where we put ourselves at the service of the Visual and Plastic Arts students of the Early Childhood Education Degree, sharing our artistic methodologies and exploring their usability in the creation of didactic projects that will later be tested in public schools in Barcelona that participate in the faculty's Working Group,

  2. CONTEMPORARY EDUCATORS: All three work in educational settings (primary schools) from different places and positions: Roc leads an art and education project between the Carme Auguet School and the Centre de Arte Bòlit, in Girona. Anita is artist-in-residence at the Dolors Monserdà Santa-Pau School within the framework of Espais C projects (Barcelona), and Martí works as a plastic arts teacher at the Octavio Paz School and accompanies the El Turó School as an advisor in its process of pedagogical renovation and creation of globalised work environments. We take advantage of our professional practices, therefore, to observe the current development of educational centres.

  3. RETIRED TEACHERS: We are initiating a space for dialogue and learning with retired teachers. We are approaching the voices of these teachers who have already abandoned their work practice, also from the practice of archiving on the methodologies of the Modern School and the experience of the teachers who played a leading role in the political resistance of education in a post-Franco context, protagonists of movements such as SEPEC and other dissident spaces with hegemonic pedagogies.

We are currently in contact with the Rosa Sensat Association, very close to Santa Mònica. We are establishing contact (the retired teachers of the RELLA group, their specialised library, the Summer Schools or their working groups), with the will to listen and take part in the debates, in order to incorporate their quality as experts and their memory in our research.

Throughout our research, we have been accompanied by teachers of teachers, such as Glòria Jové (Faculty of Education of Lérida) or the teachers of the degree in Infant and Primary Education of the University of Barcelona, the active teachers of different public schools in Barcelona with whom we collaborate, as well as Sara Torres-Vega's reading on archives specialising in art and education in institutional spaces specific to contemporary culture.

In short, under the long and inescapable shadow of the revolutionary, groundbreaking and profoundly contemporary pedagogies represented today by figures such as Ferrer i Guàrdia or Rosa Sensat, key figures in the phenomenon that today occupies schools in their processes of innovation and pedagogical renewal.
