Santa Mònica suspends public activity on 15 October due to the one-day strike for Palestine

Barcelona, 15 October 2025

Today, 15 October, the Santa Mònica will be suspending public activities and therefore remain closed to the public for the one-day strike called by several trade unions in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Santa Mònica considers it essential to continue denouncing and raising the visibility of the genocide perpetrated by the State of Israel in Gaza. Despite the current ceasefire, we continue to defend the importance of building guarantees that it is never repeated and peace agreements based on reparations for the consequences of military occupation and the colonisation project.

In recent years, the centre has hosted exhibitions, screenings, debates and collective actions by artists and activists from the Palestinian diaspora, exploring the memory and representation of Palestine through contemporary arts. Highlights include activities such as Palestina, which gave visibility to the work of artists from the Palestinian diaspora in Catalonia, 2nd Urgent Evocation / Urban Networks of Censorship, AZAR, Mobile kitchen with Mohammad Alsharqawi and other artistic mediation actions. Also scheduled are sessions in the Tuesdays of Video series, including titles such as The Colonial Mirror – Six confluences in time 2, Is an image an archive? , La pedra de Salomó, The Power of Pain and Memory of the Land, and Wednesdays of Sound and Body with proposals such as Rimas [pan]creáticas arabefuturistas. This programme is curated by various collectives and organisations that help make the Sala Bar a lively space for gathering and critical reflection.

Along the same lines, Les Mòniques – resident artists at Santa Mònica – are preparing the Week for Palestine, scheduled for the end of March 2026 to coincide with Palestinian Land Day, a space for reflection, leading on to a public programme on memory, resistance and collective creation.

Santa Mònica is also starting a process to host an artist in residence from Palestine at the centre over the next few months. The initiative aims to establish itself as an annual residency and reaffirm the centre’s commitment to international cooperation and support for artists working in contexts of vulnerability.

At Santa Mònica, art is a tool for imagining liveable futures that violence prevents from being built. We believe in collective action and the arts as a space for peace, reflection and communication. Based on this conviction, the centre actively supports artists and collectives who find in Santa Mònica a place to engage in dialogue about what concerns and moves us in order to build a society free of oppression and subjugation.
