The Santa Mònica holds a call for 21 grants for research and experimentation in artistic mediation as artists-in-residence 2026-27

Barcelona, 12 de febrer 2026

The Santa Mònica is offering 21 grants (9,200 euros each) for creators interested in developing research and experimental prototypes of artistic mediation as artists-in-residence at the arts centre for 11 months. The deadline for applications opens today, Thursday 12 February, and ends on 12 March.

The objective of the Les Mòniques programme is to promote the development of prototypes for artistic mediation devices that explore transmedia formats to open up the contents, discourses and questions posed by the arts centre to diverse audiences.

The artistic residencies are temporary 11-month stays, from 1 September 2026 to 31 July 2027, at the Santa Mònica. During this time, the artists-in-residence will initiate and participate in research processes that end up materialising in various prototypes of artistic mediation devices. The model involves working in a shared space at the centre with the aim of fostering the exchange of knowledge among participants and the collective dimension of the different research processes. The group of resident artists has access to a production stipend for the development of prototypes; during their stay, their research processes are monitored by the centre's management and technical team.

In addition to the 21 grants in the call, Les Mòniques 2026-27 will incorporate an international Mònica through a new grant in collaboration with the TEJA Network, aimed at supporting an artist in an emergency situation.

Les Mòniques are structured in seven guilds according to the following mediation categories:

a) Research in participatory mediation (3 grants)
Grants for research into experimental forms of mediation and audience activation, i.e. research into the creation of alternative forms of reception and participation in artistic and cultural events by audiences.

b) Research in spatial mediation (3 grants)
Grants for research that rethinks content in terms of the design of exhibition spaces and ephemeral architectural devices, as well as constructions in public space. Research in this category can also investigate experimental dispositions of audiences.

c) Research in digital mediation (3 grants)
Grants for research into experimental forms of content mediation through apps, platforms and other digital projects.

d) Research in communication mediation (3 grants)
Grants for research on experimental forms of mediation understood as communication and dissemination, both physical and digital.

e) Research in editorial mediation (3 grants)
Grants for research into experimental forms of mediation through design and editorial production.

f) Research in educational mediation (3 grants)
Grants for research experimenting with various educational and training activities, as well as around digital training actions.

g) Research in gastronomic mediation (3 grants)
Grants for research that explores cultural mediation and socialisation strategies through gastronomy as an artistic creation.

The period for submitting applications is from 12 February to 12 March 2026, inclusive, through the procedures portal of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The Santa Mònica is also organising an information session, in person and online, to explain all the details and resolve any doubts. We recommend attending before applying for a grant.

Information session: Tuesday 17.02.2026 / 6.30 pm / Santa Mònica lecture room and online via YouTube.

Research, artistic experimentation and participation at the Santa Mònica

The Santa Mònica is an interdisciplinary arts centre dedicated to promoting contemporary creation. Its aim is to serve as a platform for the dissemination of contemporary creativity in Catalonia and as a space for reflection to promote debate and generate ideas about the concepts surrounding artistic creation and its relationship with the public.

The Santa Mònica, based on Enric Puig Punyet's project, explores experimental forms of curatorship and is committed to collective creation, institutional de-hierarchisation and diverse formulas for horizontal participation. In total, more than 40 artists participate periodically in a process of shared construction so that the arts centre becomes a space in constant construction of new shared meanings and the opening up of new questions.

With the Les Mòniques programme, launched in 2021, the Santa Mònica shows its commitment to relational and participatory projects in the hope of generating different forms of social return to citizens and art that promotes horizontality and collective thinking.
