Open lecture of the Santa Mònica collective learning and research programme Situations (making) #11 in the framework of the exhibition Boom Crash Candy Crush

As part of Situations (making), some of the people invited to the course will also give a series of public lectures that expand on the debates guiding this edition to share them with a wider audience. Taking the concept of brain rot as a starting point, these sessions will explore the relationships between contemporary digital cultures, attention economies, technological infrastructures and the forms of power that shape our everyday experience of the internet. A public programme that complements the course's collective learning process and invites reflection, from diverse perspectives, on the political, cultural and material effects of contemporary hyperconnectivity.

With the participation of Lisa Ling and Erica Friscioni

Lisa Ling
is a whistleblower, former technical sergeant in the United States Air Force's drone surveillance programme. She began her military career in the early 1990s as a medic and nurse. She was soon recognised for her information systems skills and was encouraged to join the field of combat communications, where she took part in the operations, maintenance and security of networked communication technologies. As the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) structure expanded, it required more personnel to develop and operate it. For this reason, its Combat Communications Squadron was integrated into the drone programme and transferred to Beale Air Force Base. During her military career, she was posted to various locations, including the Air Force Distributed Common Ground System (AF DCGS) headquarters at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia; an Air National Guard facility in Kansas, and various missions abroad. Ling completed her last active-duty posting at Beale Air Force Base in California. After leaving military service, she travelled to Afghanistan to see first-hand the effects of the operations in which she had taken part. She graduated with a degree in History from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley).

Erica Friscioni
has been a principal contributor to vcinfodocs.com for three years and is a long-standing activist based in Chicago. She has taken part in anti-racist initiatives, in labour rights activism and in defending human rights against policies and practices of imprisonment and criminal control.

Boom Crash Candy Crush

What do an apparently innocent video game like Candy Crush, attention economies, and contemporary military infrastructures have in common? Featuring around twenty local and international artists, the exhibition explores how digital rewards and our interactions with screens fuel systems capable of shaping behaviour. A critical journey through the infrastructures that transform attention and data into highly valuable economic resources.
