The Santa Mònica is calling for proposals for ephemeral architecture for the Climate Shelter 2026 project.
The call is open to all those individuals or collectives who are willing to create an artistic installation that will transform the centre's terrace into a more attractive and habitable space during the hottest months of the year.
This intervention proposal may be classified under any of the disciplines of architecture, landscaping, design, and art, with the aim of becoming a climate refuge for the neighbourhood and the users of the Santa Mònica.
Proposals may be submitted from September 29, 2025, until 11:59 p.m. on October 29, 2025.
In the intervention proposals, the following will be valued:
- Integration with the environment, the center and the current exhibition: The proposal’s ability to engage in dialogue with the context and situation of the center, its artistic interest, and its critical capacity within Santa Mònica’s programming line will be considered. It will be valued if the proposal engages with the theme of the current exhibition at the time of the climate refuge installation, The Assault of Illusion, which will reflect on art as a mechanism of deception, illusion, and the construction of realities. Through concepts such as post-truth, power dynamics, and the mechanisms that sustain the hegemonic creation of fictions, the exhibition will propose a critical exploration of the artistic techniques that have shaped both desire and perception of the world. Through this investigation, it questions the extent to which, in today’s context of deepfakes and artificial intelligence, art should take on the role of revealing and challenging these devices of manipulation and deception.
- Visibility and versatility: Ability to transform the terrace into an attractive and visible space from the Rambla, habitable, accessible, comfortable and flexible, with the possibility of adapting to different situations.
- Sustainability: Capacity to soften the climatic conditions of the terrace from May to September. It will be especially valued that the proposal is reusable, proposing a life after the project, that it can be installed in some other space of the territory and/or that the manufacturing or construction materials come from reuse, as well as the internal coherence in the sustainability of the project. The adaptation of the proposal to possible restrictions derived from a drought emergency will also be taken into account, avoiding elements that require an intensive use of water.
- Technical feasibility: The objective of the call is to physically build an installation that will be maintained for five months on the terrace of the Santa Mònica. It is understood that the proposals must provide solutions that are resistant to the five months outdoors but with an ephemeral and dismountable vocation once the defined period has elapsed. Likewise, the proposals must follow the specifications in the ‘Location’ section of these rules, especially with regard to weight and other structural limitations. Experience in previous projects will be an asset.
- Economic viability: It is understood that the proposal must be able to be carried out within the detailed budget and that the person or team selected must be able to issue the corresponding invoices.
