Abstract

Cua Teatre consists of a performance that simulates a queue of people in the street, pretending to wait to enter the Santa Mònica arts centre.

The proposal is part of the project Observacions situades, a series of experiments promoted by the Spaces Guild 22-23 (Pedro Bennaton and Anna Solanilla) that used ethnographic, invisibility and observation methodologies to collect people's spontaneous perceptions, as well as their feelings and experiences in regard to the space. These observational exercises are based on the work initiated by Pedro Bennaton in 2007, developed within the framework of his academic thesis Teatre de situacions (2020), and which he has continued to expand through new experiences as a resident at the centre.

This prototype aims to collect information and research data on the interior spaces of the centre and the streets in its immediate surroundings. It does so through various formats, such as interviews, descriptions, lists of behaviours and actions observed or activated by artists and actors. Based on this information, the aim is to explore the link between the art centre and the people who pass through it, both inside and in its immediate surroundings, and to focus on the relationships generated between spaces, bodies and everyday practices.

This prototype also explores how queues shape expectation, attention and behaviour in public space.

BACKGROUND

- A device for recording observations.

- Software that allows the layout of these observations.

- Printing services.

- Queue ropes and posts.

INGREDIENTS

1. Establish a working team and agree on the main focus of the study: what facts you want to observe, what dynamics you want to analyse, etc.

2. Choose or note in the calendar performance times.

3. Do research on queuing theory and write the script.

4. Contact performers and conduct the necessary meetings and rehearsals.

5. Arrange meetings with the exhibition hall team to explain the project and your needs, and to coordinate the management of the entrance door. Also, test the spacing of the queue ropes and poles in the centre.

6. Publicise the events.

7. On the agreed day(s), hold the performance and carry out data collection.

STEPS

It is important to bear in mind that this kind of ethnographic research takes time. We recommend that the study approach be long-term and include several field visits with different types of approaches.
