Still from Menudo viaje. El sueño torcido del arte contemporáneo, by María Cañas

Menudo viaje. El sueño torcido del arte contemporáneo (2022) portrays a probable dystopia: after the collapse of the curatorial and exhibition model, the Biennale 2064 turns out to be a conceptual dung heap validated by circles of power that speculate on works of art lost in containers in tax havens and that plunge a multitude of creators into misery and slavery. In this fiction, clandestine artistic communities and hooligans roam freely in our streets, underground and cyberspace, giving way to artistic debauchery, divergence and the magic of chaos.

The video will be accompanied by a conversation with Eduardo Vaca to discuss remix culture and cultural worlds outside the institution of the Western museum. The conversation is based on the joint reading of the book Plagie, copie, manipule, robe, reescriba este libro (Valeria Mata, published in Spain by Ediciones Comisura) and her project Todo es un remix from La Experimental (Ecuador).

María Cañas

The Archivist of Seville or the Terrorist Virgin of the Archive, practises video guerrilla warfare. A cultural agitator, she practises appropriationism in order to enter into clichés and prejudices in order to dynamite them and uses laughter as an act of resistance: the all-coloured humour of connected crowds, as a strategy of insurgency or, if not, at least of resistance. Her commitment to the archive and audiovisual detritus as tools for cultural development, and to the need to educate in the recycling of our imaginaries, aims to transform us into freer, more critical and creative beings.
